How does the Instant HIV test work?
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a type of virus that causes Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome also known as AIDS. The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS report issued in 2007 estimated that there were over 5.7 million people living in South Africa with HIV. That number represents around 12% of the entire population of South Africa and 18% of the adult population, making it the Country with the highest incidence of HIV in the world.
Whilst HIV is a potentially deadly infection, with proper diagnosis and treatment the prognosis is excellent. Most people diagnosed early with HIV and receiving appropriate treatment can now expect to live a life as long and as healthy as someone not infected with this virus. The key to this however is to get tested and if positive, get appropriate treatment.
Better2Know now offers Instant HIV testing available at a growing number of our clinics across South Africa. We use only to most advanced Instant HIV tests available which will accurately detect both the Antibodies to HIV types 1 and 2 as well as the p24 Antigen. This 4th generation test delivers the most accurate results only 26 days after your possible exposure to the HIV virus. The Better2Know Instant HIV test only takes 20 minutes and is run on a drop of blood taken from a finger prick. This quick and painless test brings you the most accurate Instant testing method available today.
How long do results take?
The Better2Know Instant HIV test takes around 20 minutes to run.
Can both men and women have this test?
This Instant HIV test is suitable for both men and women. The only sample required is a few drops of blood which will be taken from a simple, quick and painless finger prick.
What happens if I test positive?
In the event your Instant HIV test result is positive or “reactive” your clinician will ask to take a further blood sample from your arm. This sample will be sent to our CPA accredited laboratory for further testing. We do this as we will never give a final diagnosis based on a single HIV test result. Better2Know follows good medical practice and will always confirm an HIV diagnosis by running three different HIV tests on any reactive sample. This ensures that the final diagnosis is correct and accurate.
